Towards Quantum Memories based on Photon Echo and their Application to Quantum Repeaters

We describe how to realize quantum memories for photons in the solid state based on the principle of photon echo. Efficiencies close to 100% could be achieved following a protocol based on the preparation of a narrow absorption line and its controlled broadening via an external field. We describe recent experimental progress towards this goal in Erbium-doped materials. Such memories are naturally suited for the storage of light fields in multiple temporal modes, e.g. trains of pulses that may or may not contain a single photon. We show that this capacity can be used to significantly increase the rate of entanglement generation over long distances, using a quantum repeater protocol based on photon pair sources and photon memories.
