The department has more than 18 research groups and laboratories with cutting-edge research innovations encompassing all major areas of electrical engineering and computer engineering. More information about EC&E research areas can be found here. IQC member Hamed Majedi is an assistant professor in E&CE, and leads the Integrated Quantum Optoelectronics Lab. IQC associate member Sujeet K. Chaudhuri holds the Val O'Donovan Chair of E&CE. To round out IQC's E&CE complement, Thorsten Hesjedal also holds IQC associate membership. The department sustains strong collaborative research activities with governmental sectors, industry and the private sectors. The ECE department offers an outstanding research environment in two recently completed new buildings with world-class research laboratories. Graduate research has been benefiting from close connections with many high-technology companies in the Waterloo area and from the very generous intellectual property policy of the University of Waterloo, which vests the rights with the inventor.
