Physics and Astronomy
The department of Physics at the University of Waterloo has 35 faculty members and numerous postdocs. It runs a joint graduate program with the University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University, the Guelph-Waterloo Physics Institute, with more than 200graduate students. The main research themes are Astronomy, Optics, Condensed Matter Physics, Biophysics, Gravitation, and Quantum Information. Our faculty are consistently recognized for their outstanding work in research and teaching with many awards, including Distinguished Teaching Awards, Herzberg Medals, Premiers Research Excellence Awards, Sloan Fellowships, and Cottrel Scholars Awards. This tradition of excellence persists throughout the entire Faculty of Science at Waterloo, which has the highest research funding per professor of any faculty of science in Canada.
