Scholarships

Students enrolled in the quantum information graduate program will be eligible for IQC scholarships.

IQC Entrance Award

Several awards valued at $5,000 are available each term. These awards are supported by a variety of sources, including the Bell Family Fund and Industry Canada. The awards are made to graduate students entering studies in quantum information at the University of Waterloo and the Institute for Quantum Computing, based on academic excellence and potential for research.

IQC Achievement Award

Several awards valued at $5,000 are available each term. These awards are supported by a variety of sources, including the Bell Family Fund and Industry Canada. The awards are made to UW graduate students working on quantum information at the Institute for Quantum Computing, based on exceptional achievement in research.

Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Fellowships

Graduate Fellowships are available to be awarded to international graduate students up to a maximum of $20,000 per year. Recipients will be chosen based on academic excellence and potential for research in quantum information and will also receive a UW award equivalent to tuition. The Fellowship can be a multi-year award provided the recipient maintains a satisfactory academic standing in a graduate program.

Applications

Students applying for the quantum information collaborative program or for IQC membership are automatically considered for additional funding.

Existing IQC graduate student members can apply for funding with the following form.

IQC Member Funding Application

The scholarship committee meets once per semester to evaluate scholarship applications.
In order to guarantee that your application is considered on time please submit it by the appropriate deadline:

  • February 10th 2010 (for awards to start in Spring 2010)
  • June 10th, 2010 (for awards to start in Fall 2010)
  • October 10th, 2010 (for awards to start in Winter 2011)

Student Fellowship on Quantum Circuits

IQC seeks outstanding candidates interested in or conducting research in the areas of quantum circuit synthesis and optimization, quantum algorithm design, and quantum circuit architectures. A strong mathematical background, and a proven ability, or strong potential, for excellence in research are required. Strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, and an interest in developing code are essential. The research is envisioned to bridge the gap between high-level quantum algorithms and implementations on a concrete physical platform. Successful candidates will be embedded into an interdisciplinary and international team including engineers, computer scientists, and physicists and will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with academic and government agencies, and industry.

The preferred deadline for receiving student applications is December 15th, 2010, but late applications may be considered until positions are filled.  Applications will be processed as they are received.

For further information, please contact Dmitri Maslov or Michele Mosca.

To apply, please:

  1. Send a copy of your CV, a research statement (optional), and contact information for at least 3 referees to Dmitri Maslov or Michele Mosca.
  2. Complete an application to at least one graduate program at the University of Waterloo.
