Biography

Ashwin Nayak began his studies in theoretical computer science with a B.Tech. at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (1995). He developed an interest in quantum computation at University of California, Berkeley, during his graduate studies under the supervision of Umesh Vazirani. After his PhD in computer science from UC Berkeley (1999), Ashwin was a post-doctoral fellow at DIMACS Center (Rutgers University) and AT&T Labs-Research. Here he had the opportunity to work with Michael Saks, Peter Shor, and Andrew Yao. From January 2001, he was at Institute for Quantum Information, California Institute of Technology, as a post-doctoral scholar with Leonard Schulman. During Fall 2002, he participated in the special semester on quantum computation at Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley.

Ashwin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, University of Waterloo, an Associate Member of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Waterloo, and a Scholar at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.
